Do you think maybe nano and/or vim wraps at the 68th column and _then_ adds in
the space at the end of the line (since there is an option to retain that
space or remove it)?

For example, in nano, try "set fill 69" in conjunction with "set justifytrim"
which removes the whitespace at the end of the lines.
