XPost: alt.guitar.amps, alt.politics.republicans, tx.general       XPost: tx.guns       From: NoEmail@ever.com              3.8 million more Americans file for unemployment benefits: Initial       unemployment claims reached a seasonally adjusted total of 3.8 million       last week, the sixth straight week that millions of Americans filed new       applications as the coronavirus pandemic wreaks havoc on the economy.              The new figure brings the six-week total of new claims to more than 30       million, by some estimates one-fifth of the entire American workforce.              Consumer spending, the U.S. economy’s key driver, posted its steepest       monthly decline in records tracing back to 1959 as much economic       activity ceased amid the coronavirus pandemic.              The Commerce Department said consumer spending fell 7.5% in March. It       also said personal income fell by 2%, the largest decrease since 2013,       as employers started to cut payrolls and reduce workers’ hours and       compensation.                     U.S. economy shrank at fastest pace since 2008. Gross domestic product       contracted at a rate of 4.8% in the first quarter, ending the longest       economic expansion on record. T                     Coronavirus deaths in U.S. top 60,000. That number accounts for more       than a quarter of the 227,847 fatalities globally. In the 24 hours       ending at 8 p.m. Wednesday, the 2,496 deaths in the U.S. made up the       highest toll since April 17.                     States were unprepared for the unemployment surge. Many have       benefits-processing systems that are decades old, complicating matters       for the record number of people applying for financial help.              Nearly 900 workers at Tyson meat plant in Indiana test positive for       coronavirus              --- SoupGate-Win32 v1.05        * Origin: you cannot sedate... all the things you hate (1:229/2)    |
