EL PASO, Texas (NV) - President Joe Biden on Sunday, January 8
visited the city of El Paso, Texas, where the headland borders
Mexico, according to Politico news site.

This is Biden's first trip to the region since becoming US
   president in January 2021.

The president met with border patrol agents and visited a
   federally funded immigrant shelter.

Greg Abbott, the governor of Texas, greeted Biden at the airport
and personally handed the US president a letter with Republican
proposals on immigration policy, in which he called the visit a
   mere a photo session.

“The president has caused chaos at the border, needs to be here.
It happened that he was two years late and spent about $20
   billion," Abbott told reporters.

For his part, the governor also faces charges of using migrants
as pawns to facilitate thousands of people from the border to
   the northern cities.

According to reporters present, Border Patrol agents showed
President Biden the methods used to detect smuggled goods and
get him to the border wall separating the two countries.

Karine Jean-Pierre, a spokeswoman for the White House, said on
the schedule that President Biden is scheduled to meet with
local business leaders. When pressed by reporters, Jean-Pierre
did not say whether Biden spoke to immigrants during the trip.

President Biden's visit to El Paso comes amid Republican
criticism of the federal government's immigration policies,
especially the nearing end of Regulation 42, a provision that
prohibits immigration for reasons due to the pandemic is used by
both the Biden and Trump administrations to rapidly deport
millions who cross the border into the US undocumented.

On Thursday, January 5, President Biden announced a new policy
to curb illegal immigration, under which the US will accept
30,000 immigrants a month from four countries but will also
block those who do not use the legal route. in this policy.

In a rare speech at the White House addressing the southern
border crisis, President Biden said the policy would provide a
humanitarian "amnesty" for qualified immigrants from Cuba,
   Haiti, Nicaragua and Venezuela. .

The policy will be part of a border strategy that includes
Regulation 42, an immigration policy from President Donald
Trump's administration that allows denying immigrants because of
   the COVID-19 pandemic.

“Don't just drag to the border. Whoever you are, stay where you
are and legally file from there," Biden said, referring to
people from those four countries intending to immigrate to the
   United States.

“From today, anyone who does not submit a due process
application will not be eligible for this new amnesty program.”

President Biden announced the new immigration policy as the
Departments of Homeland Security (DHS) and the Department of
Justice (DOJ) announced details of their plans to introduce new
rules, similar to what President Trump often called "orders"
   transit is prohibited.”

Under the new rule, immigrants will be barred from applying for
asylum in the United States if they are not first rejected by
another country. The rule will also consider immigrants who do
not pass through the border legally as ineligible. Prior to
implementation, DHS and DOJ will hear public comments on this
   regulation. (MPL) [kn]
