I think your definition of child is the problem:  to my mind being
younger does not make them less physically, mentally, and socially
developed, and childhood isn't a relative state depending on who's in
the room.  An 18-year old with a 9-year old and a 60-year old with a
30-year old are not equivalent by virtue of being twice the age of
their partner, and my 16 year old cousin doesn't mature rapidly when I
leave the room and his 8 year old cousin comes in.
