some do, many do not... i remember quite a few complaining about having to hit
escape twice... i generally told them to just wait and let the mailer time out
and it would pass them to the BBS anyway... hitting escape twice was
simply a quicker signal that it was a user connecting and the mailer didn't
need to spend time trying to detect different mailer protocols...

most do that to see what software was used to create the message... that and
signaling the end of the message is their purpose...
