   I must admit that I don't understand your problem.

   Do you have a textfile that you can access with your favourite editor?

   Does this favourite editor of yours not support the standard Ctrl-A (mark
all), -C (copy all marked), -V (paste all) and so on? If so it's not
Thunderbird that's at fault, because it's been supporting those old commands
from the very beginning.
