I know ... It's on the list for years now, but didn't make it so far ...

Same here. Tend to introduce (in the more distant future) a trashbin for this
so no need to ask and undo is still possible. However, actually to easily
implement this a lot of internal changes needed to be done, that are now
however finished. Mainly, WP now processes messages largely independent of the
containing folder, which is a prerequisite for this.
