FWIW: golded and other FTN editors recognize the following and generally
indicate the attention by a color change of the wrapped text...

  *bold*
  /italic/
  _underline_

in my setup, the above all appear as dark cyan while quoted text is bright
cyan and the text i type is dark white... all on a black background... the key
factor is that the color change attracts one's eyes to the emphasis on the
words wrapped with the format indicator...
