So what is stopping you?

It is in line with the general principle of "do not reinvent the wheel". If
the OS can take care of it, let the OS do it.

Both. And also the POV of the one who has studied IPv6 especially in relation
to Fidonet. It is also how Binkd does it and AFAIK other Fidonet IP mailers
too.
