Sometimes I think that the forecasters, and even more so the announcers that gleefully report the bad news, make things sound worse than they really are or will be, just to get people's attention. Our trees have probably adapted some to north winds, just not as much as to the winds from the south and the west, since those are what we usually get... But we get the north and east winds often enough that the trees will have had to adapt some... Up at the Pond, that would be more of an issue, with huge trees having very shallow root systems, due to the bedrock only a few feet (or in some instances, inches) down, and yet, we rarely have trees down in even the worst storms... I guess that's helped me have more respect for tree root systems... |
