Typically, almost anywhere in Alaska is colder than Maryland at any time of
the year. The way the jet stream has been situated this winter has allowed
for a highway of artic air to flow way down the east coast of the US.

Even northern Florida hit freezing last week. It has been snowing in places
that have not seen snow in many years. Georgia, Louisiana, South Carolina,
etc.
