PUBLIC INFORMATION STATEMENT NATIONAL WEATHER SERVICE LITTLE ROCK AR 600 AM CDT THU JUN 25 2015 ...LIGHTNING SAFETY AWARENESS WEEK... The National Weather Service has declared the week of June 21st through the 27th as LIGHTNING SAFETY AWARENESS WEEK. This is the fourth of five public information statements to be issued by the National Weather Service office in Little Rock containing details about lightning. Today`s topic is LIGHTNING SAFETY AT WORK. While summer is a good time to work outside, it is very important to do so in a safe environment. Any time a thunderstorm is in the area, no place outside is safe. Between 2006 and 2013, 38 people were struck and killed by lightning in the United States while at work. About two-thirds of those killed were farmers, ranchers, roofers, lawn care workers, or construction workers. It takes time to shut down when you are working outside. It requires quitting what you are doing and putting equipment away. When there is lightning around, even more time is needed to get to a safe place. To make sure there is enough time between work stoppage and place of safety, monitoring weather conditions is very important. At the very least, work should halt when thunder is heard. When thunder roars, go indoors! Question: Of all work related activities, which is the most deadly? Answer: From 2006 to 2013, farming and ranching accounted for 37 percent of the work-related lightning fatalities (14 of the 38 deaths). Much of this was due to the vulnerability of the activity; this is, direct lightning strikes are a greater threat to people in open areas such as fields and pastures. In such areas, there is often no place of safety nearby. There is one more topic this week: FRIDAY - Lightning Safety Around the Home Posted by VPost v1.7.081019 --- Virtual Advanced Ver 2 for DOS * Origin: The Thunderbolt BBS (1:19/33) |
